The Illuminati was a secret society founded in 1776 in Bavaria by Adam Weishaupt with the goal of liberating humanity from religious oppression and monarchical tyranny through the spread of Enlightenment ideals like reason, individual liberty, and secular governance.
Structured with hierarchical secrecy and inspired by both Jesuit discipline and Masonic rituals, the Order sought to infiltrate existing institutions, especially Freemasonry, to reshape society from within, replacing superstition with rational thought and promoting a utopian vision of universal equality and freedom.
Though officially suppressed by 1787, the Illuminati's ideas and mythos endured, becoming symbolic of hidden influence, elite power, and ideological subversion in the centuries that followed.
