Here in Rudolf Steiner's unique way he discusses the modes of consciousness and the need for a new consciousness.
"There are two forms of consciousness familiar to all—dream consciousness and ordinary waking consciousness. In spiritual-scientific research a third form is added, which we call clairvoyant consciousness.
We regard dream consciousness really only as a kind of interruption of our continuity of ordinary awareness, and this is because we do not remember our dreams very much. In fact we do dream continually while asleep. The content of our dream life that we are aware of only makes up a part of our total dream experiences—the ones we recall when awake.
Spiritual science therefore teaches that we possess three levels or also three modes of consciousness: dream consciousness, ordinary waking consciousness and clairvoyant consciousness which gains access to the supersensible world."
