The Gospel of Thomas is part of the Nag Hammadi library discovered in Egypt in 1945, basically a collection of non-canonical sayings allegedly made by Jesus and considered by the Church as a heretical Gnostic text. Scholars speculate that the works were buried in response to a letter from Bishop Athanasius declaring a strict canon of Christian scripture.

Gnosis literally means "knowledge", in the context of a spiritual knowledge, or divine insight, emerging directly from the inside, such as an inner voice, a gut feeling, or conscience; not dependent on any priests, or external influence.
